Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
