Body of Triathlete Apparently Taken by Shark Located on California Shore

Firefighters in California have located the remains of a triathlete on a beach north-west of Santa Cruz, California. This discovery comes nearly seven days after she was reported missing amid growing belief that she was killed by a marine predator.

The deceased of the athlete were recovered this Saturday, as stated by her relatives. Fox, 55 years old, was part of a gathering of more than a dozen swimmers who began their swim from a coastal park near the Monterey coast on December 21st, but she did not come back to shore. A passerby informed first responders that they spotted a large shark with what appeared to be a person in its jaws surface from the ocean.

The tragic event and news of the predator garnered considerable concern and initiated extensive search operations from rescue teams to search for her. A day later, Jean-François Vanreusel and other fellow swimmers from her training community held a commemorative gathering along the beach path. Her dad remembered her as an compassionate and good-hearted person who loved swimming and had competed in several races, including the annual Alcatraz triathlon.

Search and rescue teams last week launched a comprehensive search and rescue operation involving multiple US Coast Guard vessels along with responders from area fire and police departments. The Coast Guard called off its search efforts for the swimmer after a 15-hour operation that scoured approximately a vast area of ocean.

Rescue workers announced on that Saturday that they had found a body on Davenport beach. The local sheriff's department released information the same day, citing an open case into the incident.

“Earlier today, at approximately 14:00 hours, a person was located in the sea south of that location. Given the nearby location to the earlier shark incident victim in that region, our office is working closely with the corresponding agency and the law enforcement regarding the investigation,” the announcement said.
