Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
