Israelis mark second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war administration of the territory
Public Reaction
In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality areas and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the night falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city said additional victims had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, health workers said.
