Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
