Meteorologists are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly essential.
