Rory McIlroy hails BBC's top sports triumph with individual and team accolades.

Seconds before he was crowned, a anxious thought darted through the golfer's mind. He said he was concerned, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."

"It's been a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was honored in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can use that."

This time around, however, there was no late twist. The result was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the team winners, who were named the top squad.

Non-Stop Adventures

Choosing not to attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already thinking about his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.

"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

Nevertheless, McIlroy stated he has no plans to rest on his laurels, despite achieving the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.

"More majors, season-long rankings, international events, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep improving and have the hunger, that's the most important thing."

Team Triumph

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the squad honor, also applauded golf's stellar night and his pal's award.

"These become the memories that will stay with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he is so worthy so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to secure his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

As he was leaving, a last query arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"As long as they stop conceding four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a hint of optimism around."

After a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that the champion golfer is looking on the bright side.
