The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
