The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
